Honoring a Legend: Farewell to Coach Uchida

On a peaceful morning, in the comfort of his home and surrounded by his family, a legend passed away at the age of 104. The opportunity to celebrate his life would come on September 28th, a celebration that cannot do justice to 104 years well lived.

While Mr. Uchida’s goal may have always been to build good citizens, along the way, he was able to build a diverse, strong, and prosperous community, filled by people whose lives he touched. The events began on September 27th, in true SJSU Judo fashion, with an open mat, a practice comparable to no other in the history of SJSU. Filled with endless generations of alumni, the dojo was bustling with old friends catching up, current students trying to mingle, and confused visitors who didn’t quite get the memo of what was transpiring.

The heatwave passing through San Jose showed no mercy that night, the already hot and stuffy dojo was amplified by the heat of over 100 people, yet there was a strange feeling of joy spread across the room. The dojo, built in Mr. Uchida’s name is the remembered home to many of the alumni, but with Mr. Uchida's ever watching eye hanging up on the wall, they quickly acclimated to the new room.

The next day, everyone gathered at the San Jose Buddhist Temple in the heart of Japan Town, a fitting place to say goodbye, considering the impact that Coach Uchida had in its construction. The warm weather persisted, making it a beautiful day, as people filled the temple, all you could hear was the sharing of stories and memories of Mr. Uchida’s impact on their lives. Wishing a farewell, the service was filled with Buddhist chantings, incense burnings, eulogy from Dan Kikuchi, and words of appreciation from Steve Sakai. A service that showed the respect, appreciation, and love for Mr. Uchida.

The day concluded with a communal meal, where stories flowed as freely as the food. Everyone shared their favorite dishes, many prepared with their own recipes passed down through generations. Speeches from former students and friends painted a vivid picture of Mr. Uchida’s unwavering commitment to judo and to shaping young lives. They recounted how he welcomed everyone, regardless of their skill level, and encouraged them to strive for excellence both on and off the mat. His lessons extended beyond judo, instilling a sense of responsibility and kindness that resonated throughout the community.

As the day came to a close, it was clear that while Mr. Uchida may no longer be physically present, his spirit and teachings would continue to inspire and guide the countless lives he touched. The gathering was not just a farewell but a celebration of a life well-lived, a testament to a man who truly built a community.

The last gathering would take place at Mr. Uchida’s home, hosted by his daughters Lydia and Aileen, a delicious home cooked brunch was served to whoever wanted to come, though a smaller event in number of attendees, this event was still filled with people whom most cherished Mr. Uchida.
